Thoughts and notes

Throughout my four years at Florida International University, I have taken a number of
courses that incorporate the global learning aspect into classroom discussions, assignments, and
modules. With this additional knowledge, I observe life and scenarios through a different scope
and apply what I know to understand and solve problems. Courses like How We Know What We
Know (IDS 3309), have shown me that it is important to take into account where you get your
information because of the high possibility of it being false, filtered, or biased. Moreover,
through extensive writing assignments on topics like the critical perspective and secrecy that
may occur within our own government, I was able to analyze how information is processed and
how what we see, hear, and know can be fully controlled.

Furthermore, in my major specific courses like Global Media and Society (MMC 3303), I
was able to learn about all forms of media from the very first telegraph, all the way to the
different methods of communication used in today’s society. These lessons were all followed by
a final group project in which I was able to create a video presentation about the media and
society in Saudi Arabia. This specific course truly expanded my global perspective by
emphasizing the drastic difference between the freedoms we have in the United States, in
comparison to those limited rights of the citizens of Saudi Arabia. Additionally, in this course, I
was also able to watch my classmates share their projects that focused on other countries and the
media and society within them; information presented to me regarding all these countries
completely changed my outlook on the media and its abilities. Ultimately, this led me into deep
thought about how what I was studying was so different all around the world and how privileged
I was to have the opportunity to pursue this career path.

Nonetheless, this global perspective and knowledge has served as a strength in areas I couldn't have even imagined; it led me to gain internship opportunities where my skillset proved essential and useful. Through internships like the one I completed at CasaCuba, I was able to use everything I had learned throughout my time at FIU and put it into practice through the projects I worked on and ideas I brought to life. I learned how essential this perspective is in my own career field and was able to use that awareness to gain future opportunities. Due to my experiences, courses, involvements, and service to the community, I was able to secure an opportunity within the Multicultural Advertising Internship Program (MAIP) after graduation where I will get to be that voice that is so often silenced for minorities and speak up in knowledgeable manners due to the education I received. Essentially, I am grateful that I attended a university that places so much importance on educating their students on this global perspective and that is always worlds ahead.
